How would you respond if someone said to you, “I don’t believe in heaven”?
There’s an old line that runs the other direction: everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die to get there. Yet plenty of people today would tell you they don’t believe heaven exists at all. So is heaven real – and how do you respond when someone insists it isn’t?
It’s a more common moment than you might think. Often it surfaces right when you’re talking about grace – explaining that heaven is a free gift, not something earned or deserved. Or maybe you’ve asked someone, “Have you come to a place where you know for certain that if you died today, you’d go to heaven?” And somewhere in there, the person stops you: “Look, I just don’t believe there’s such a place as heaven.”
Here’s how to handle it – without getting derailed.
You Don’t Have to Win the Heaven Argument First
When someone says they don’t believe in heaven, you don’t have to stop everything and prove its existence before you can go on. Try this instead: “Well, let’s just suppose for a moment there is a place called heaven. What would you say then?”
That keeps the conversation moving. You invite the person to play along, and you stay on the real subject. Because here’s the truth – if that person eventually comes to know the Lord, their belief in heaven will take care of itself.
In fact, let me ask a question that might surprise you. Is it actually necessary to believe in heaven in order to have a relationship with God and receive eternal life?
No. It isn’t.
Now, you might assume belief in heaven is the non-negotiable. But in and of itself, believing in heaven has never saved anyone. The one essential – the only essential – is exercising true saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. It’s much like the question of the Bible: just as you don’t have to prove the Bible is God’s word before you can witness, you don’t have to prove the existence of heaven first either. The critical thing is a personal relationship with Jesus through faith in Him. Settle that, and everything else comes into focus.
Several Good Reasons to Believe in Heaven
But suppose the person presses you: “Give me one good reason I should believe in heaven.” That’s a fair challenge – and there are actually several good answers.
For one, the Bible plainly teaches that heaven exists. You can’t read Scripture honestly and remove heaven from it; it’s woven through the whole story. The Old Testament patriarchs, kings, prophets, and priests believed in it. Jesus Himself taught the reality of heaven again and again. The apostles believed it, the early church believed it, and Christians for two thousand years have affirmed it. That’s a remarkable weight of testimony to set aside.
But the reasons aren’t only historical – they’re deeply practical.
Belief in heaven motivates you. It lifts your sights, calling you to live at the highest level in pursuit of eternal rewards rather than only temporary ones.
Belief in heaven comforts you. When you consider your own death – and one day each of us will face it – knowing that heaven is real, and knowing who gets to dwell there, changes everything about how you meet that moment.
Belief in heaven consoles you. If you’ve lost loved ones who knew the Lord, heaven means they are not gone forever. They are in the presence of God at this very moment, and you will see them again.
And belief in heaven thrills you. When you read what Scripture says heaven is like – a place with no more sin, no more sickness, no more suffering, no more sorrow, no more death – it becomes something to genuinely long for.
But the greatest reason of all is this: heaven is the place where God Himself dwells. It is where we will be in His presence and worship Him forever. Honestly, it’s hard to imagine why anyone would turn down an eternity like that.
What the Bible Says Heaven Actually Is
For the person who’s genuinely curious, Scripture has a great deal to say about what heaven is.
It’s worth knowing, first, that the Hebrew word for heaven – shamayim – is plural, “the heavens.” The Bible actually speaks of more than one. There is the sky above us, the realm of clouds and birds. There is the expanse of space, the realm of sun, moon, and stars. And there is the “third heaven” that Paul mentioned (2 Corinthians 12:2) – the dwelling place of God Himself. That third heaven is what we mean when we speak of heaven as our eternal home.
Here is what Scripture tells us about it:
- Heaven is a created place – it has existed since the beginning (Genesis 1:1).
- Heaven is where God’s throne is (Isaiah 66:1).
- Heaven is where God the Father dwells (Matthew 6:9).
- Heaven is where Jesus ascended after His resurrection (Acts 1:9-11).
- Heaven is where the angels dwell (Isaiah 6; Ezekiel 1, 10).
- Heaven is where the spirits of departed believers are right now (2 Corinthians 5:8).
- Heaven is the inheritance of the righteous, the place Jesus has gone to prepare (John 14:1-3).
And here’s something that may surprise you: Scripture says that one day God will dissolve the present heaven and earth (2 Peter 3:10). But don’t let that trouble you – because in their place He will create a new heaven, a new earth, and a new Jerusalem, where His people will dwell with Him forever (Revelation 21:1). The best is not behind us. It’s ahead.
The Question That Matters Most
Well, let’s bring it together. When someone says they don’t believe in heaven, you don’t have to freeze or win a debate. Invite them to keep talking, point them to Christ, and trust that the rest will follow. There are good reasons to believe heaven is real – the testimony of Scripture, the witness of God’s people across the centuries, and the comfort and hope it brings. And the Bible tells us plainly what heaven is: the dwelling place of God, prepared for His people, soon to be made new.
But let me leave you with the same question the gospel presses on every one of us. Suppose you were to die today and stand before God, and He asked you, “Why should I let you into My heaven?” What would you say?
Take a moment with that question, because how you answer it is the most important thing about you.
If your answer is some version of “I’ve tried to be a good person” or “I’ve done more good than bad,” then hear this gently: that is not the answer that opens the door. None of us is good enough to earn our way into the presence of a holy God. If heaven could be earned, it would no longer be the free gift the Bible says it is.
There is only one answer that opens the door, and it’s a name: Jesus. He lived the perfect life you couldn’t. He died on the cross to pay for your sins, and He rose again. He is the door into the Father’s house – and the wonder of it is that the door is standing open to you right now.
You don’t have to clean yourself up first. You don’t have to understand everything about heaven. You simply have to come – turning from your sin and receiving Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and Lord. The moment you do, the question is settled forever. And the place He has prepared – that better, brighter country – becomes your home.
